Wild Sign

Highly Recommend

SPOILER ALERT: Please be aware that this is book 6 of this series. If you have not read the previous books, this review might spoil events in those books. If you want to see my spoiler based review, click here.

Once again Charles and Anna are called in to handle a paranormal incident that is beyond anyone else’s abilities. This time, however, the problems are much closer to home this time when it’s Leah’s past that comes calling. A group of people who were camping in the wilderness of Northern California suddenly disappear. It seems that past events are repeating themselves, but no one is sure what that past is. It’s a good thing that both Charles and Anna are good at resolving tough dangerous mysteries.

Wild Sign by Patricia Briggs is another captivating story of the next major problem mated pair Anna and Charles investigate and deal with. They are truly the Marrok’s best team to send when there is trouble a foot. This case does cause them some difficulty, however, since they are unsure what they are dealing with or how to solve the problem. Of course, they dive right in anyway and find themselves being surrounded by witches and a mysterious being that is right at the root of it all.

The first thing that always stands out to me in Briggs’s novels is how smooth and easy her writing style is. This book is an excellent showing of this. The words flow smoothly and paint a clear picture of what is happening. I never feel lost or need to reread to understand events. Briggs writes in a more simplistic style which I highly enjoy. It is the kind of writing that allows you to just sit down and read for long periods of time.

I also find it very interesting as we are shown a lot more about characters that we have previously known very little about. Bran Cornick and his mate Leah are two fairly prominent characters in both this series and Briggs’s Mercy Thompson series. Yet, we are not given many details on their past or their relationship. This book gives the readers a look into the past and explains many things about the rough and unapproachable Leah Cornick, and a small peak into the relationship she has with Bran.

We also see continued development in many aspects of the story. We see many of the other characters in this story through the events that take place. All of Briggs’s characters are excellent, and her character building is seamless as it is in her previous books. There is also continued world building that deepens the reader’s understanding of what kind of people, creatures, and magic inhabits this version of Earth. With so many books already featured in this world, it is always amazing to find that there is more to discover about it. There are new creatures introduced, new magic to learn about, and new understandings of characters and their motivations.

I do find this story has an interesting flow and pacing compared to previous Alpha & Omega books. Though there usually is an investigative portion where Anna and Charles gather facts about the situation and decide how it should be handled, in this story, there is a much longer investigative period. This makes the pacing seem a little slower until the end where it picks up rather quickly into the main conflict and resolution. This can be a good thing or a weak point depending on the reader and if the slower pacing bothers him or her.

Overall, this book is just as good as all the previous books in the series, and I am extremely excited for the next one. If you like the previous books in this series, you won’t be disappointed in this one. If you’re new to the series and considering giving it a try, I highly recommend starting it.
