White Trash Warlock

by David R. Slayton

Highly Recommend

Adam Binder hasn’t had the easiest life or the best relationships with his family. He also has some magic. It isn’t a lot and mostly allows him to interact with the spirit world, but when something big starts happening, he is good enough to step up to the plate and take it head on.

White Trash Warlock is David R Slayton’s first book, and I absolutely loved it. For those who like urban fantasy, I highly recommend this novel. It has such a wide range of concepts and events that I think would appeal to many readers.

The first thing I want to mention is Slayton’s writing style. He has such a smooth and simple style that is easy to read and easy to connect to. He writes this novel in third person limited between two characters, but he makes the narration so close to the characters that it feels like a first-person story. It really allows you to feel what the characters are thinking and feeling. He also seamlessly incorporates LGBTQ characters and problems into the story which I really appreciate, as I’ve mentioned in a previous review (The Obsidian Tower by Melissa Caruso). I truly believe that fantasy novels should have more inclusion and representation of LGTBQ characters and problems, and I’m very happy to see new books including them.

As for our main character, Adam Binder, I really love him. I truly connected to him and love his personality. He is a truly good guy even though he hasn’t had the easiest life. He cares about people and respects all magical creatures and beings. He doesn’t look down on any of them. Adam is also someone who will stand up for what is right and do his best to help a person but who also does not see himself as anyone special or noteworthy. He is a very realistic person who understands his limits and knows when to ask for help when he gets past his personal expertise. Plus, Adam is a fairly open person. He is willing to try rebuilding old relationships and to opening himself to new relationships and love despite his checkered past. If you like characters who are just truly strong spirited and genuinely good people, you will find Adam to be a great main character.

In fact, there are many great characters in this book beyond just the main character. We interact with Adam’s family members, especially his brother who we occasionally hear from his point of view. We get to know several magical beings who are prominent in the plotline, and we even have a romantic interest. All of the characters in the book are written really well with good development. I was actively interested in knowing all of them as well as rooting for the romance. Slayton is definitely good at writing characters that make you care about them.

Another thing I really liked about this book is the complexity of the world building. There is a lot of interesting fantasy elements weaved into this world. The way magic and the spirit realm work is very unique and cool. I love the concepts he presents as well as the life he gives them. It isn’t just presented as this is magic and the basic rules of it. Instead, he is constantly building more ideas and explain more details about how magic works, how the spirit world works, and how these two different worlds are woven together and interact with each other.

To be honest, the only con about this book is that there is no book two yet. I will definitely be looking forward to the next one whenever Slayton releases it. I’m already struggling with the wait.

  • Great writing style

  • Complex magic system

Cons:

  • Having to wait for book two

Nice review. I know you don’t give out 5 star reviews very easily so it has to be an excellent book. I am ordering it up on Amazon right now. I am always excited to find new high quality new authors.
