Great Fantasy Movies For Families

Mary Poppins

This movie is a great movie for a family to watch together. Mary Poppins helps bring a lot of joy and adventure to little Jane and Micheal’s life while helping heal the wounds that reside in George Bank’s heart. The magic in this movie is focused around bringing joy and adventure into the world for both the characters and the watchers a like. Plus, the music from this movie is a whole lot of fun. It is truly a feel good movie with wonder and the meaning of family.

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas

This animated movie depicts an epic sea adventure conducted by Sinbad and his crew. There is a controlling goddess, a strong female love interest, and plenty of obstacles to overcome. The main characters are easy to enjoy with their charisma and personalities. Plus, it has some elements of mythology mixed into the story which can appeal to anyone who finds greek mythology interesting. This movie is definitely a great exciting adventure with lots for both adults and kids to have fun watching.

The Princess Bride

“Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…” This movie has it all wrapped up in one great adventure, great for a family to watch together. This movie is softer on the fantasy elements since there isn’t a lot of flashy displays of magic though there are a few creepy creatures that add to the danger of the adventure.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Roger Rabbit is a great toon who loves making cartoons for the humans. The only problem is he is being framed for a murder he didn’t commit. He hopes that detective Eddie Valiant will be able to help clear his name. This movie has a lot to offer both kids as well as adults and fantasy elements that allows the toon world and the real world to connect and interact with each other. It isn’t the most traditional form of fantasy since most of those elements revolve around the toons and their role in the real world, but it is still a fun adventure with comedy and mystery.

Enchanted

This romance is such a fun fantasy that travels between the animated world and the real world. Giselle is hoping for her happy ever after. Once she is in the real world, she discovers what it’s like to be real. She never realized that her prince charming’s step mother would come to the real world after her planning to use her magic to kill her. This has a lot of the fun classic Disney tropes along with some more serious adult romance themes. Its a fun movie for the whole family to watch.

Sky High

In a world with super heroes, there is a school to train kids with special powers. Now, I don’t usually mentally think of superhero movies as fantasy stories, but technically they are and have lots of aspects of urban or low fantasy stories. Sky High is a fun movie with a lot of relatability to situations in school and a classic story of good against evil. I definitely recommend it as a fun family movie.

I didn’t say there weren’t more! And I will definitely have to list some more in the future. HaHa. For this post I was drawing from what I watched as a kid with my family that my parents also really liked. Plus, I haven’t seen Dragons of Autumn Twilight… I know that’s probably horrible since I love the books so much. I only found out about the movie within the last year anyway. So, I will definitely post some more suggestions in the future and once I’ve seen the movie I can add that to the list. lol
