Top 5 Fantasy Books of 2022

This is a list of my favorite five books that were released in 2022. I’d love to hear what your favorites were.

1. Legends & Lattes

by: Travis Baldree

Legends & Lattes was my favorite book from last year. It is truly an amazingly written feel good fantasy story. It is a fun read with great characters and yummy descriptions of food. This book is a one novel story. It is a relaxing enjoyable read. And, if you’re like me, you’ll hope to see all these characters again in a future novel. Plus, the fantasy elements really just fit well with the world Baldree created. Check out my written review or my video review for more of my thoughts on this novel.

2. The Dragon’s Promise

by: Elizabeth Lim

This novel is the second book in a duology, and I was really excited for it to be released after reading the first book (Six Crimson Cranes). This novel continues the story and is just as strong as the first one. I love all the characters as well as the unbending bond between Shiori and her brothers. I love the romance involved. And, the fantasy elements of this world are excellent. If you read, and enjoyed, the first novel, I think you will really enjoy this novel.

3. Soul Taken

by: Patricia Briggs

I am always a huge fan of Patricia Briggs’s books, especially in her Mercy Thompson series. I am always looking forward to her next book, and this one was no exception. If you love the Mercy Thompson series, I would recommend continuing on with the series in this newest addition. The characters are always growing and evolving with each book, keeping it fresh and exciting with each new problem. If you’ve never read this series before, start with the first book. The series is progressive instead of standalone. Check out my written review for more of my thoughts on the novel.

4. The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea

by Axie Oh

I found this book by complete accident. It was featured in a post I saw on social media, and I thought it looked interesting. Luckily, it was a very good book and became one of my favorites from the year. It is a nice standalone young adult fantasy romance. It is technically meant for thirteen to fifteen year olds, but I didn’t feel like I was reading a young adult book. It is definitely mature enough for adults to enjoy. Plus, it has a lot of interesting asian inspired culture and myths worked into the story. Check out my written review to see more of my thoughts on this book.

5. Why Odin Drinks

by: Bjørn Larssen

Why Odin Drinks is great for my fellow mythology lovers. It is a fun comedic story about Odin and how he became the All Father of the Norse gods. This book made me laugh a lot with all the modern references and jokes. I loved the spin on the gods and goddesses presented in the story. Plus, the writing style was really great. If you love comedy and Norse mythology, you might want to check out this book as well. Check out my written review for more of my thoughts on this story.

If you’ve read any of the books I mentioned here, what did you think of them? I’d love to know all about your newest fantasy adventures!

So … my favourite fantasy of 2022?

    Can I count beta reads?

NOT counting beta reads – I REALLY loved Wistful Ascending by JCM Berne, so definitely that one. I really liked Empire’s Heir and some of the other Empire books by Marian L Thorpe – but are those strictly fantasy? They’re a kind of historical fantasy. I also quite enjoyed The Last Prince (well, the whole Coming of Aed trilogy) by EG Radcliff.

Of these, I tried to read Why Odin Drinks. It’s definitely both engaging and funny enough, but I ended up DNF’ing it, since some of the humor, particularly the stuff that has do with things like killing animals and eating them and other things in more or less that category, were a bit too much for me.

I haven’t read any of your favorites, but I will have to check them out. I don’t think I know any of the authors. Thanks for the suggestions!

As for Why Odin Drinks, I completely understand why you dropped it. It does take everything to an extreme, so I can see why it wasn’t for you in the end. I hope if you end up trying any of the others in this list that you enjoy them.
