Common Supernatural Beings

*I classify supernatural beings as mythological and fantasy beings that are mostly depicted in stories that take place in our world. These definitions and descriptions may be different depending on the author and how they create their beings and mythological lore.

Angels- are beings that are almost always related to religion. They are often depicted as beautiful men or woman with large white wings and a holy glow or light about them. However, despite their relation to religion, they are not always depicted as good. There are many stories that show angels as cruel and vain as well as many stories that show them as good helpful guides. It really depends on the author and what kind of world and story they have created.

Vampires- are beings usually depicted as attractive men or women who were once human but are now considered a member of the undead. There are several ways to become a vampire. Some authors only require a vampire to bite a human to change them while other authors have a more complicated changing process with a mix of vampire blood and dying in some way. It is also becoming more popular for vampires to be born instead of made. They can also be depicted as good or evil depending on the story and world they reside in. Most vampire abilities include drinking blood, supernatural strength and speed, mind control of some kind, and sexual allure. They generally have a variety of weaknesses that can include any combination of: burning in sunlight, unable to tolerate religion or religious symbols, aversion to garlic, being burned with fire, and wooden stakes through the heart.

Werewolves- are beings that are either born or made (depending on the story) into people who can turn into giant wolves. Some authors have their werewolves only turn wolf during the full moon (or have to turn during the full moon) and others can turn at will. They are usually exceptionally strong and fast and have heightened senses. They are often sensitive or harmed by silver. Some are repelled by religion, but it is a fairly uncommon trait. Generally, they live in packs with a pack leader, and often lone wolves are frowned upon.

Demons- are beings commonly associated with religion. Most stories have them as evil creatures or beings. There are a few stories that flip the concepts around where demons and angel’s roles are reversed and demons are not evil and angels not good, but I have found most stories are more often to still put them as evil or the antagonist.

Shapeshifters- are beings that can change into some kind of animal. Usually, the animal is a wild animal instead of a pet. Usually shapeshifters are not bound by specific weaknesses or timing for turning. They do have heightened senses and reactions. Generally, the social structure is related to whatever animal they turn into. This can include being in a structure group or to be more of a loner.

Fae- The fae are beings with a wide variety of powers and abilities. A common one, however, is the ability to change their appearance and disguise who they are. Many authors base the fae off characters and being in mythology and legends from a variety of cultures. Their stance as good or evil is not certain one way or another, especially since they commonly are required to only speak the truth. Generally, their main weakness is iron.
