Cliff’s Descent

by Dianne Duvall

Recommend

Spoiler Alert: This is book 11 of the series. If you haven’t read the previous novels, there may be spoilers for events in those books.

Cliff, a vampire who didn’t want to hurt people, turned himself in to the immortal guardians when he was offered the choice. Unfortunately for him, the hunt for a cure from the vampiric virus is taking longer than he can manage to stave off the madness and as he grows closer to Emma, the woman he is slowly falling in love with, he has even more of a reason to live. Will he be saved, or will the madness drive him completely insane?

Cliff’s Descent by Dianne Duvall is just as fun as the rest of the immortal guardian series. I am very excited to finally have a novel dedicated for Cliff especially since he has always been such a beloved character for me throughout the series. It was about time he got a little happiness. If you are a fellow fan of Cliff, then I think you will find it very interesting to see how the madness he suffers is portrayed. I think Duvall does a good job immersing the reader in his mental struggles as he is constantly fighting against it.

Duvall is an excellent writer and this book is no exception. Her writing style is so smooth and easy that the pages just fly by. It is also a nice quick read as it is under the three hundred page mark. If you are hoping for something fun, easy, and quick to read this book will definitely fit your needs while still having the same amount of depth to it’s world and the characters.

Of course, the characters are another highlight of this novel. If you enjoy the characters in this series, many of the main characters return yet again in this novel to interact with Cliff and help him in his journey as a vampire. We are also introduced to Emma and some of her friends who all add to the story and the romance between her and Cliff. I definitely feel that Emma is a nice compliment to our honorable vampire. Duvall did a great job creating a woman who could be there for Cliff even during his darkest moments.

I do feel that this book is not quite as amazing as the previous books in the series. This book’s plot spans over the entire series until the end of book nine. This means that as the reader, we have already witnessed many of the events already, just in other books and from other perspectives. It also covers a large span of time unlike the other books in the series. In order for Duvall to get from her starting point all the way to her end point, we have less of a focus on the romance. In fact, there are several mentions of long periods of time passing before the next event. So, with Duvall prioritizing the previous events we have already seen, there was less time to cultivate the romance between Cliff and Emma. I wish we had had a little more focus on the two of them since the other books already covered the non-Emma related events. I do still enjoy the romance, I just wish it was a little more of the focus or that we had more detailed moments between them.

Overall, I think if you like the Immortal Guardian series, you will enjoy this story. I don’t think it is the best one, but it is definitely a lot of fun with a lot of amazing characters involved. Plus, we finally get to see Cliff having a bit of happiness of his own. I am looking forward to seeing who will be the next guardian to find his or her true love.

*As a side note, I did listen to this book as an audiobook and highly recommend it. Kristen Potter is an excellent narrator.
